Implant-Supported Dentures

If you are missing all or most of your teeth, you may be tired of dentures that slip, click or limit what you can eat. Implant-supported dentures combine the stability of dental implants with the convenience of a denture. At Edgemont Dental in Southwest Edmonton, we plan and place implants in house, so your treatment is handled by one team.

What Are Implant-Supported Dentures?

An implant-supported denture is a denture that connects to dental implants placed in your jawbone, instead of resting on the gums alone. The implants act as anchors, holding the denture securely in place. Depending on your treatment plan, the denture may snap onto the implants and be removable for cleaning, or be designed as a fixed bridge that stays in place.

Implant Denture Options

  • Snap-on overdentures: Removable dentures that snap onto implants and come out for cleaning.

  • Fixed implant bridge: A non-removable option that is cleaned much like natural teeth.

  • All-on-4: Four implants support a full arch of teeth.

Benefits of Implant-Supported Dentures

  • Greater stability: The denture is anchored, so it is less likely to shift when you speak, laugh or eat, and no adhesive is needed.

  • Improved chewing: A secure fit can make it easier to enjoy a wider range of foods.

  • Supports your jawbone: Implants help stimulate the bone, which can help prevent the bone loss that often follows tooth loss.

  • More comfortable fit: With less movement there is often less rubbing on the gums.

  • Greater confidence: Many patients feel more at ease knowing their denture is anchored in place.

Is This Option Right for You?

Implant-supported dentures may be a good choice if you:

  • Are missing all or most of your teeth
  • Have dentures that are loose or uncomfortable
  • Want a more secure alternative to traditional dentures
  • Have enough jawbone to support implants, or are able to have bone grafting if needed

Your dentist will examine your mouth, take 3D cone beam CT imaging and discuss your goals to find the right fit for you.

The Treatment Process

1. Consultation and planning

We assess your bone and gum health with imaging and plan the number and position of implants. You receive a clear treatment plan and itemised cost estimate before treatment begins.

2. Implant placement

Implants are placed under local anaesthetic, and sedation is available for added comfort.

3. Healing

The implants fuse with your jawbone over roughly three to six months. We will advise you on caring for your mouth during this time.

4. Attaching your denture

Once your implants are secure, your custom denture is fitted and adjusted for comfort and appearance.

Before Your Visit

  • Share your health history and medications at your consultation.
  • If you plan to have sedation, ask us how to prepare. Oral sedation requires a companion to drive you home.
  • Follow any eating, drinking and medication instructions your dentist gives you before surgery.
  • Bring your current dentures, if you wear them, so we can assess whether they can be adapted.

After Your Treatment

  • Mild soreness for a few days is usual and can be managed with over-the-counter medication, as your dentist advises.
  • Follow the aftercare instructions we give you for eating and cleaning while the implants heal.
  • Keep your follow-up visits so we can check healing and the fit of your denture.

Caring for Your Implant-Supported Denture

  • Clean the denture and the area around the implants every day
  • Brush your gums and any remaining natural teeth
  • Attend regular checkups so we can check the implants, the denture and the health of your gums

Why Choose Edgemont Dental

Planning, placement and the finishing work are all handled by our in-house team, so you are not passed between offices. We provide honest timelines and cost breakdowns, offer sedation options for anxious patients, offer payment options and direct bill most major insurance providers.

Frequently Asked Questions

How are implant-supported dentures different from regular dentures?

Regular dentures rest on the gums. Implant-supported dentures attach to implants in the jawbone, which gives them greater stability.

Are implant-supported dentures removable?

Some designs can be removed for cleaning and others are fixed in place. Your dentist will explain which option suits you.

How many implants will I need?

It depends on the design and your bone. Your dentist will recommend the number and placement after your imaging.

How long does treatment take?

The implants need roughly three to six months to heal and fuse with the bone before the final denture is attached. Your dentist will give you a timeline for your case.

Can I use my existing denture?

In some cases an existing denture can be adapted. Your dentist will assess this at your consultation.
