Full and Partial Dentures

Missing teeth can make eating, speaking and smiling harder than they should be. Dentures are a well-established, accessible way to replace missing teeth. At Edgemont Dental in Southwest Edmonton, we design dentures that are comfortable, look natural and are made for your mouth and your goals.
What Are Dentures?
Dentures are removable replacements for missing teeth and the surrounding gum tissue. They are custom made to fit your mouth, and modern dentures can look very natural. We offer both full and partial dentures, depending on how many teeth you need to replace.
Types of Dentures
Full dentures
Full (complete) dentures replace all of the teeth on the upper jaw, the lower jaw or both. They rest on the gums and are designed to give you a secure, comfortable fit and a natural appearance.
Partial dentures
Partial dentures replace some missing teeth while you keep your remaining natural teeth. They fill the gaps, help keep your remaining teeth from shifting and restore your ability to chew and speak. Depending on your needs, they can use a metal framework or tooth-coloured clasps.
Immediate dentures
Immediate dentures are placed on the same day as your extractions, so you are not without teeth while you heal. They usually need more adjustment as your gums heal and change shape.
Implant-supported dentures
If you would like greater stability, dentures can be anchored to dental implants. Our implant-supported dentures page explains this option in more detail.
Signs You May Need Dentures
- You are missing several or all of your teeth
- You have teeth that are badly damaged or cannot be saved
- Chewing is difficult or painful because of missing teeth
- You feel self-conscious about gaps in your smile
- Your existing dentures are loose, worn or uncomfortable
Getting Your Dentures
Consultation: Your dentist examines your mouth, discusses your goals and explains your options.
Planning: Impressions, measurements, photos or 3D scans are used to design dentures made for you.
Fittings: Try-in appointments let us check fit, bite and appearance and make adjustments before your dentures are finished.
Your finished dentures: We show you how to wear, clean and care for them.
Follow-up: Adjustments after you start wearing your dentures help make sure they feel right.
Before Your Visit
- Bring a list of your medications and any previous denture or x-ray records.
- If extractions are part of your plan, follow the instructions your dentist gives you before the appointment.
- Think about what matters most to you, such as comfort, appearance or chewing, and tell us at your consultation.
After Your Treatment
- Expect an adjustment period of a few weeks as you get used to eating and speaking with your dentures. Start with softer foods and cut food into small pieces.
- Sore spots are common at first. Return for the follow-up adjustments we include rather than trying to fix them yourself.
- If you have immediate dentures, follow your dentist's instructions on when to keep them in and when to remove them.
- Remove your dentures for cleaning and for sleeping unless your dentist advises otherwise.
Denture Repairs and Relines
Over time the shape of your gums changes and dentures can become loose or uncomfortable. If your dentures are cracked, worn or no longer fit well, let us know. We can assess whether they need an adjustment, reline or replacement.
Caring for Your Dentures
- Remove and clean your dentures daily
- Handle them over a towel or basin of water to avoid breakage
- Soak them as directed by your dentist overnight
- Keep brushing your gums and any natural teeth
- Visit us regularly so we can check the fit and the health of your mouth

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take to get dentures?
It depends on your situation, including whether any teeth need to be removed first. For conventional dentures, the process from first appointment to final delivery typically takes several weeks. Your dentist will explain the timeline at your consultation.
Will my dentures look natural?
Yes. Dentures are made with acrylic and porcelain teeth matched to your natural colouring, so they suit your face and smile.
Will dentures affect how I eat and speak?
There is usually an adjustment period as you get used to them. With time and follow-up adjustments, most people eat and speak comfortably.
Should I consider implants instead?
Implants and implant-supported dentures offer more stability. Your dentist can explain the pros and cons of each option for you.
Do you repair or reline dentures?
Yes. If your dentures are cracked, worn or loose, we can assess whether they need an adjustment, reline or replacement.
