Sealants and Fluoride

The best way to treat a cavity is to prevent it. Dental sealants and fluoride treatments are two quick, comfortable ways to help protect your child's teeth. At Edgemont Dental in Southwest Edmonton, we apply them as part of your child's regular visits when they are suitable.

Dental Sealants

What are sealants?

Sealants are thin, protective coatings painted onto the chewing surfaces of the back teeth. These surfaces have deep grooves where food and bacteria can collect and where a toothbrush cannot always reach. A sealant fills in those grooves, creating a smoother surface that is easier to keep clean. Our sealant material is tooth-coloured.

How are sealants applied?

  • The tooth is cleaned so the sealant can bond to a plaque-free surface
  • Small cotton rolls keep the tooth dry
  • The sealant is painted on and hardened with a blue light in seconds
  • Your dentist checks the bite and the seal

The process is quick, does not need drilling or needles, and is generally comfortable.

Which teeth are sealed?

Sealants are most often placed on the back teeth (molars and premolars) soon after they come in, typically around ages 6 to 7 for the first permanent molars and again around ages 12 to 13 for the second molars. Your dentist will advise which of your child's teeth would benefit.

Fluoride Treatments

What is fluoride?

Fluoride is a mineral that strengthens tooth enamel and makes it more resistant to decay. It is a well-established way to help prevent cavities.

How is fluoride applied?

A fluoride varnish is brushed onto the teeth during a check-up in a quick process that takes under a minute. It sets within minutes. Children at higher risk of cavities may have fluoride applied more often, and your dentist will recommend what suits your child.

Before Your Child's Visit

  • Have your child brush before the appointment, as usual.
  • Talk about the visit in positive words and avoid words like "needle" or "hurt".
  • Let us know about any allergies or health concerns when you book.

After Your Child's Treatment

  • After fluoride, your child should avoid eating or drinking for about 30 minutes.
  • Sealants can be used for normal eating right away. Avoid very sticky or hard foods if your dentist advises it.
  • Keep up twice-daily brushing and daily flossing, and attend regular checkups so we can check the sealants.

Why Prevention Matters

  • Fewer cavities: Sealants and fluoride help protect teeth from decay.

  • Less discomfort: Preventing a cavity means avoiding the pain and the visit to fix it.

  • Healthy habits: Positive, routine dental visits help kids feel at ease with dental care.

  • Protecting adult teeth: Healthy baby teeth help guide healthy permanent teeth.

Sealants and Fluoride Work Together

Fluoride strengthens the enamel across all tooth surfaces, while sealants guard the deep grooves on the chewing surfaces. Together with brushing, flossing and regular checkups, they are a good combination for cavity prevention. Your dentist will recommend what suits your child's age and cavity risk.

Tips for Healthy Little Teeth

  • Help your child brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste: a rice-grain amount under age 3, and a pea-sized amount from ages 3 to 6
  • Floss once teeth are touching
  • Limit sugary snacks and drinks
  • Keep up with regular checkups and cleanings
