Fillings and Cavity Care for Kids

Cavities are common in children, and they are very treatable, especially when caught early. At Edgemont Dental in Southwest Edmonton, we treat cavities gently and explain everything in a way kids can understand, so the visit feels manageable for them and for you.
Why Treat Cavities in Baby Teeth?
It can be tempting to skip fillings for baby teeth because they will fall out eventually. But baby teeth matter. They help your child chew and speak, and they hold space for the permanent teeth. Untreated decay can cause pain that affects eating, sleeping and concentration at school, and it can spread to the nerve, cause an abscess and affect the permanent teeth that come in later. Treating cavities early protects your child's comfort and their future smile.
Signs of a Cavity in a Child
- Complaints of tooth pain or sensitivity to hot, cold or sweets
- White, brown or black spots on a tooth
- A visible hole or pit in a tooth
- Food that keeps getting stuck in one spot
- Chewing on one side only, or avoiding certain foods
- Swelling around a tooth
Many cavities have no symptoms in the early stages, which is why regular checkups and x-rays are important.
How We Treat Cavities in Kids
Tooth-coloured fillings
We use tooth-coloured composite fillings for all children's restorations. No silver or metal is used. They are placed after the decayed part of the tooth is removed, and shaped to restore the tooth's function.
A gentle, step-by-step approach
We use a tell, show, do approach. We explain what is going to happen in simple words, show it on a model and only then do it. Your child's comfort comes first, we keep the visit unhurried, and children are never restrained or forced into treatment.
Numbing and comfort
A topical numbing gel is applied first, then a small injection once the area is numb, and we wait until your child is fully numb before starting. For children who need extra support, nitrous oxide is available, and oral sedation can be arranged for very young or anxious children.
What to Expect

Before Your Child's Visit
- Speak positively about the visit and avoid words like "needle", "shot" or "hurt".

Frequently Asked Questions
Does my child really need a filling in a baby tooth?
Often yes. Untreated decay can cause pain and infection and can affect the adult teeth. Your dentist will explain whether treatment is needed for your child's tooth.
Will the filling hurt?
The tooth is numbed, so your child should not feel pain during treatment. Their cheek or lip may feel numb for a while afterwards.
How can I help my child feel less nervous?
Speak positively about the visit and let us know about any worries. Our team will take time to explain each step, and nitrous oxide is available if your child needs extra support.
Can my child have dental x-rays?
Your dentist will recommend x-rays when they are needed to find cavities between teeth that cannot be seen by eye.
Is nitrous oxide available for my child's filling?
Yes. Nitrous oxide is available for children who need extra support during treatment, and oral sedation can be arranged for very young or anxious children. Ask our team when you book.
