Tooth Extractions and Wisdom Teeth Removal

Sometimes a tooth has to come out, whether it is a painful wisdom tooth, a tooth damaged beyond repair or one that is causing crowding or infection. At Edgemont Dental in Southwest Edmonton, we explain why a tooth needs to be removed, make sure you are comfortable and give you clear aftercare instructions so you can recover well.
Why Teeth Are Removed
Impacted wisdom teeth: Wisdom teeth that do not have enough room to come in properly can become trapped under the gum or bone.
Pain and infection: Partly erupted wisdom teeth can trap bacteria and cause swelling, pain and recurring infection.
Severe decay or damage: Some teeth are too damaged to be repaired.
Gum disease: Advanced gum disease can loosen a tooth beyond saving.
Crowding: A tooth may need to be removed to make room for others.
About Wisdom Teeth
Wisdom teeth, also called third molars, are the last teeth to come in, usually in the late teens or early twenties. Not everyone needs theirs removed. If they come in straight, are healthy and can be cleaned, they may be left alone and monitored. Your dentist will examine them, take x-rays and recommend what is best for you.
Signs your wisdom teeth may need attention
- Pain or tenderness at the back of the mouth
- Swollen, red or bleeding gums around a wisdom tooth
- Bad breath or a bad taste
- Difficulty opening your mouth fully
- Crowding or shifting of nearby teeth
- Cavities or gum problems in the back teeth that are hard to clean
What to Expect During Extraction
1. Exam and x-rays
We examine the area and take digital x-rays, such as panoramic or 3D images, to see the position of the tooth and its roots.
2. Planning and comfort
We explain the procedure and your options. The area is numbed with local anaesthetic so you feel pressure but not pain. Nitrous oxide and oral sedation are available for patients who are anxious or have complex cases.
3. Removing the tooth
Your dentist gently removes the tooth. A simple extraction involves loosening and lifting the tooth out. Impacted teeth may need a small incision to reach the tooth beneath the gumline, which we will explain beforehand.
4. Aftercare
We give you gauze, ice pack advice, diet guidelines and follow-up instructions so you know how to look after the area and what to expect.
Before Your Visit
- Tell us about your medications, allergies and health history.
- If you plan to have sedation, follow the instructions we give you about eating, drinking and arranging a companion to drive you home.
- Plan to rest after your appointment, and stock up on soft foods.
- Bring your insurance details and we will verify your coverage.
After Your Treatment
- Bite gently on the gauze as instructed to help a blood clot form
- Rest for the first day and avoid strenuous activity
- Use ice packs on your cheek as advised, eat soft foods and avoid hot drinks at first
- Do not use a straw or spit forcefully, as this can dislodge the clot
- Take pain relief as directed by your dentist
- Gently rinse with salt water after the first day, as advised
- Call us if you have heavy bleeding, fever, worsening pain or swelling, or pain that returns after the first few days, which can be a sign of dry socket

Frequently Asked Questions
Do all wisdom teeth need to be removed?
No. If they are healthy, properly positioned and easy to clean, they may be left alone. Your dentist will check them at your exam.
Is wisdom teeth removal painful?
The area is numbed during the procedure. You may have soreness afterwards, which your dentist will help you manage.
How long is the recovery?
Recovery varies by person and by how involved the removal was. Many people feel better within a few days. Your dentist will tell you what to expect.
Can I get a tooth removed if I am in pain right now?
Call us as soon as you can. We will assess your tooth and arrange an appointment as soon as possible.
Is sedation available for tooth removal?
Yes. Most extractions are done under local anaesthetic with you awake but numb, and nitrous oxide or oral sedation is available for anxious patients and complex cases.
