Dental Crowns and Bridges

A badly damaged tooth or a gap in your smile does not have to wait. Dental crowns protect and restore teeth that are cracked, worn or heavily filled, and dental bridges replace missing teeth by spanning the gap. At Edgemont Dental in Southwest Edmonton, we offer both, using modern technology, including same-day CEREC crowns, to get you back to a strong, natural-looking smile with fewer visits.
Dental Crowns
What is a dental crown?
A dental crown is a custom-made cap that fits over a tooth, restoring its shape, strength and appearance. We offer porcelain crowns, which are colour matched to your natural teeth and well suited to visible front teeth, and strong zirconia crowns, which are tooth-coloured and well suited to back teeth.
When might you need a crown?
- A tooth is cracked, chipped or worn down
- A large cavity or old filling has weakened the tooth
- A tooth has had a root canal and needs protection
- You want to improve the shape or look of a tooth
- You need a crown to support a dental bridge or to finish a dental implant
Same-day CEREC crowns
With digital 3D scanning and CEREC technology, a crown can often be designed, milled and placed in a single appointment in our office, so you may not need a temporary crown or a second visit. Your dentist will let you know if a same-day crown is right for your tooth.
Dental Bridges
What is a dental bridge?
A dental bridge replaces one or more missing teeth. It is anchored by crowns on the teeth on either side of the gap, with a replacement tooth (pontic) in between. A bridge can also be supported by dental implants, which means the neighbouring teeth do not need to be reshaped.
Why replace a missing tooth?
- It restores your ability to chew and speak comfortably
- It helps keep neighbouring teeth from shifting into the gap
- It fills the space in your smile
- It helps spread bite forces evenly
Crowns, Bridges or Implants?
Each option has its place. A crown protects a tooth that is still there. A bridge or an implant replaces a tooth that is gone. An implant does not involve the neighbouring teeth, while a bridge may suit you better when the neighbouring teeth already need crowns, or when cost or timeline is a factor. Your dentist will explain the pros and cons of each for your situation, so you can choose the option that suits your teeth, your goals and your budget.
The Process
Exam and planning: Your dentist examines the tooth, takes digital x-rays and discusses your options.
Tooth preparation: The tooth is gently prepared under local anaesthetic.
Digital scan: A 3D scan captures your tooth for a precise fit.
Temporary crown: If your crown is made in a dental lab rather than in our office, a temporary crown protects the tooth in the meantime.
Placement: Your crown or bridge is fitted, checked for bite and comfort, and securely bonded.
Before Your Visit
- Tell us about any pain, sensitivity or recent changes in the tooth.
- Let us know if you grind your teeth, as this affects the type of crown we recommend.
- If you would like sedation, mention it when you book so we can plan for it.
- Bring your insurance details and we will verify your coverage before your visit.
After Your Treatment
- Your mouth may feel numb for a couple of hours, so take care when eating or drinking hot foods.
- Some sensitivity for a few days after the anaesthetic wears off is normal and usually settles on its own.
- If you have a temporary crown, avoid sticky and hard foods and floss carefully.
- Avoid chewing ice or hard candy, and do not use your teeth as tools.
- Brush twice a day, floss daily (including around and under a bridge, as shown by your dental team) and keep up with regular checkups so we can monitor the crown edges.
- Call us if your bite feels uneven or sensitivity lasts beyond a week.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a dental crown last?
With good care, crowns can last many years. How long they last depends on factors such as your oral hygiene, your bite and habits like teeth grinding.
Does getting a crown hurt?
The tooth is numbed so you should feel comfortable during treatment. Your tooth may feel sensitive for a short time afterward.
Can I get a crown in one visit?
In many cases yes, thanks to same-day CEREC technology. Your dentist will advise whether your tooth is suitable.
Is a bridge or an implant better?
It depends on your teeth, gums, bone and goals. Your dentist can talk you through each option at a consultation.
What are your crowns made of?
We offer porcelain crowns, which are colour matched and well suited to visible front teeth, and zirconia crowns, which are strong, tooth-coloured and well suited to back teeth. Your dentist will recommend the best material for your tooth.
