Healthier Gums,
Healthier Life

Gum disease affects your whole body — not just your mouth. Our periodontal treatments stop the damage and protect your long-term health.

Understanding Gum Disease

More Than
Bleeding Gums

Gum disease (periodontal disease) is a bacterial infection of the tissue surrounding your teeth. It begins as gingivitis — reversible with professional cleaning — but can progress to periodontitis, which destroys the bone supporting your teeth.

Most adults have some degree of gum disease, and many don't know it — because the early stages are painless. Regular check-ups allow us to catch it before it causes irreversible damage.

The link between gum disease and systemic health is well-documented. Research connects untreated periodontitis to increased risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes complications, and adverse pregnancy outcomes.

Treatment Options

Comprehensive
Gum Care

Periodontal Assessment

We measure the depth of the pockets between your teeth and gums using a probe. Pocket depths greater than 3mm indicate gum disease. X-rays help assess bone levels.

Scaling & Root Planing

A deep cleaning performed below the gumline. We remove tartar and bacteria from tooth roots and smooth the root surfaces to help gum tissue reattach and heal.

Antimicrobial Treatment

Localised antibiotic therapy placed directly into periodontal pockets to eliminate bacteria and support healing after scaling and root planing.

Periodontal Maintenance

After active treatment, more frequent recall appointments (every 3–4 months) keep the disease under control. Gum disease doesn't have a cure — just managed remission.

Halitosis Treatment

Persistent bad breath is almost always caused by bacteria — often at or below the gumline. We identify the source and treat it directly, not just mask the symptoms.

Gingivitis Treatment

The earliest stage of gum disease. At this stage, it's fully reversible with a professional deep clean and improved home care. Early treatment prevents progression.

Modern Care for
a Foundational Problem

Gum disease is treated differently today than it was a decade ago, with better imaging, gentler scaling techniques, and a maintenance schedule built around your specific risk factors instead of a generic six-month default.

We see a lot of it, simply because we see a lot of Southwest Edmonton. If you've been told you have early gum disease, or you're just not sure, an assessment here gives you a clear picture and a plan, not a lecture.

The Journey

From Diagnosis to
Healthy Gums

01

Periodontal Assessment

We measure pocket depths, assess bone levels with x-rays, and evaluate the extent of disease to create an accurate treatment plan.

02

Deep Cleaning

Scaling and root planing removes tartar and bacteria from below the gumline. This is done under local anaesthetic for your comfort.

03

Healing Period

4–6 weeks for your gums to heal and reattach. We review your home care routine and adjust your hygiene habits to support recovery.

04

Ongoing Maintenance

Regular periodontal maintenance appointments every 3–4 months keep the disease in remission and protect your long-term oral health.

FAQ

Common Questions

Is gum disease really that serious?

Yes. Periodontal disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults. Beyond oral health, research has linked gum disease to heart disease, diabetes, stroke, and adverse pregnancy outcomes. Treating gum disease is one of the most impactful things you can do for your overall health.

Is scaling and root planing painful?

We perform the procedure under local anaesthetic, so you won't feel discomfort during treatment. Some patients experience tenderness for a day or two afterward, which resolves quickly. Most patients are surprised by how manageable it is.

Can gum disease be cured?

Gingivitis (early gum disease) is fully reversible with professional cleaning and improved home care. Advanced periodontitis can be controlled and stabilised, but requires ongoing periodontal maintenance appointments. The goal is remission — keeping the disease from progressing.
