Precision Restorations
Built to Last
Inlays and onlays are indirect restorations — custom-made in a dental lab and bonded precisely to your tooth. They're the ideal solution when a tooth has too much damage for a standard filling but not enough to need a full crown.
Because they're fabricated outside the mouth to exact specifications, inlays and onlays fit better, seal more reliably, and last significantly longer than large direct fillings.
- More durable than direct composite fillings
- Preserves more natural tooth structure than a crown
- Precisely fitted for a superior seal and fit
- Natural tooth-coloured ceramic material
- Resistant to staining and wear
- Can last 20+ years with proper care
Inlay, Onlay,
Filling, or Crown?
Inlay
Fits within the cusps (the raised points) of the tooth. Used when the cavity or damage is confined to the central chewing surface — a direct replacement for a large filling.
Onlay
Extends over one or more cusps of the tooth. Used when damage is more extensive but not severe enough to warrant a full crown. Sometimes called a 'partial crown.'
vs. a Filling
Fillings are moulded directly in the mouth. Inlays and onlays are lab-crafted for a more precise fit, greater strength, and better longevity — ideal for larger restorations.
vs. a Crown
A crown covers the entire tooth. Inlays and onlays are more conservative — we remove only the damaged structure, preserving as much healthy tooth as possible.
What to Expect
01
Examination
We assess the extent of decay or damage and determine whether an inlay, onlay, filling, or crown is the right restoration for your tooth.
02
Tooth Preparation
The damaged or decayed area is removed under local anaesthetic. The tooth is shaped and impressions (digital or traditional) are taken for the lab.
03
Temporary Protection
A temporary restoration protects the tooth while your custom inlay or onlay is crafted by our dental laboratory — typically ready within 1–2 weeks.
04
Bonding & Finishing
The permanent restoration is checked for fit, adjusted if needed, and bonded securely. We polish the margins for a smooth, seamless result.
Common Questions
How is an inlay or onlay different from a filling?
Fillings are placed directly into the tooth and shaped chairside. Inlays and onlays are fabricated in a dental lab from a precise impression, then bonded to the tooth. This results in a better fit, greater strength, and longer life — particularly for larger restorations.
What material are inlays and onlays made from?
Most inlays and onlays today are made from tooth-coloured ceramic or porcelain, which is durable, stain-resistant, and matched to your natural tooth colour. Gold inlays are also available for patients who prefer them.
How long do inlays and onlays last?
With good oral hygiene and regular check-ups, ceramic inlays and onlays can last 20 years or more — significantly longer than large direct fillings, which often need replacing every 5–10 years.
Is the procedure painful?
No. The procedure is carried out under local anaesthetic. You may feel some sensitivity for a few days after placement, which resolves on its own.

Is an Inlay or Onlay Right for You?
If you have a large filling that needs replacing or a tooth with moderate damage, an inlay or onlay may be the perfect solution. Book a consultation to find out.
