Treat Cavities Now,
Prevent Problems Later
Cavities in baby teeth matter — despite the fact that baby teeth eventually fall out. Untreated decay can spread to the nerve of the baby tooth causing pain and infection, and can affect the developing permanent tooth beneath.
A filling in a baby tooth is a small, fast procedure that stops the decay in its tracks and saves the tooth to do its job — holding space for the adult tooth growing below.
- Hold space for incoming permanent teeth
- Aid in speech development and chewing
- Untreated decay spreads to the nerve causing pain and abscess
- Infected baby teeth can damage permanent teeth developing beneath them
- Early loss causes neighbouring teeth to shift, creating alignment problems
How We Make Fillings
Comfortable for Kids
Tell-Show-Do
We explain what we're going to do in age-appropriate language, show the tools (no surprises), then do the procedure. This demystifies the process and dramatically reduces anxiety.
Topical Numbing First
We always apply topical anaesthetic before administering any injection — most children don't even feel the needle when we take this step.
Tooth-Coloured Restorations
We use composite resin (tooth-coloured) fillings for all children's restorations — no silver, no metal. Natural-looking and bonded securely to the tooth.
Four Reasons Not to
Wait on a Cavity
Stop Decay in Its Tracks
Removing decay and sealing the tooth prevents the cavity from spreading to the nerve — avoiding pain and more extensive treatment down the line.
Protects the Permanent Tooth
The permanent tooth developing beneath a baby tooth can be damaged by an infected root — a filling prevents this from ever happening.
Quick & Comfortable
Most fillings take 20–40 minutes. Our team works efficiently and gently to get your child in and out with minimal fuss.
Builds Trust
A positive filling experience builds the foundation for a lifetime of comfortable dental visits — we invest in that relationship from day one.
What Happens
During the Filling
01
Numbing
Topical anaesthetic gel is applied first. Once numb, a small injection is given — most children don't feel it. We wait until fully numb before beginning.
02
Decay Removal
Using a small instrument or laser, only the decayed tooth structure is removed — we preserve as much healthy tooth as possible.
03
Filling Placement
Tooth-coloured composite resin is placed and sculpted layer by layer to match the natural tooth shape, then cured with a blue light.
04
Bite Check
We check the bite carefully and make any final adjustments so everything feels completely natural. Done — your child is good to go.
Common Questions
Does my child need a filling in a baby tooth if it's going to fall out anyway?
Yes. Baby teeth don't fall out immediately — a cavity in a 4-year-old may be in a tooth that won't be lost until age 10–12. Untreated decay causes pain, abscess, and can damage the permanent tooth underneath.
What if my child is too scared to cooperate?
We have a range of approaches: tell-show-do technique, nitrous oxide sedation, and for very young or anxious children, oral sedation can be arranged. We never restrain children or force treatment.
Will my child's filling fall out?
Modern composite fillings bond securely to tooth structure. With proper care they last many years — often until the baby tooth naturally falls out on its own.
